In 2015, the international theme of World Suicide Prevention Day is Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives.’ It is speaking up to reduce the stigma around talking about suicide prevention safely. It is about standing up to make a positive impact on our mental health and wellbeing. It is about being self informed and aware of support and services available to all those touched by suicide and those building a resilient community to prevent suicide.
An average of 120 deaths by suicide is recorded in Fiji every year
The Health Ministry hopes to create awareness on the fact that suicide is preventable and that talking about it and seeking help can be a life-saving action
The march in Suva will begin at 9am from the Suva Flea Market to Ratu Sukuna Park where a number of activities such as an oratory contest, a visit from the Police Dog Unit, a performance by the Pasifika Voices and more will be on display to commemorate those lost to suicide.
