Jarryd Hayne has been charged with aggravated sexual assault after handing himself into police for questioning on Monday over a rape allegation made against the out-of-contract NRL star. It was reported last week that a woman claimed that she suffered injuries during a sexual encounter with Hayne in the NSW Hunter Valley on September 30, and that she had photographs to back up her story.
Hayne reported to the Ryde police station around 4pm on Monday afternoon.
It is understood Hayne refused to answer questions without his lawyer present.
Earlier on Monday police issued a statement saying: “Police are investigating following reports a woman was sexually assaulted by a 30-year-old man in late September.
The investigation is being led by detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.”
