The search giant did the same thing following the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in 2015
Google, the search giant, has added a black ribbon to its homepage, as a mark of respect to the victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack . The Black Ribbon Image was added to the page this morning, after 22 people were killed and 59 injured when a suicide bomber carried out a terror attack at Manchester Arena.
Hundreds of people fled the packed arena screaming after hearing ‘loud bangs’ at the end of an Ariana Grande concert last night. Many of those present at the concert were young female fans of primary school age. Police have confirmed the death toll includes children.
This is not the first time Google has placed a black ribbon on its homepage. It did the same thing following the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in 2015. Unusually for an image occupying the Google doodle spot, the ribbon does not link through to a page or provide more information on the incident.
This is perhaps intended to reflect the collective sense of speechless shock felt in response to the tragedy. Google joins a long list of companies and individuals like Apple and Facebook paying their respects. By showing their solidarity to the victims and all those affected by the attack.
