Avegant Glyph, A great realization of a mind blowing concept – but even though it’s four years old, it’s ahead of its time. When you want to watch something, you can slide the headphones down over your face and enjoy your own personal theatre. It’s both a crazy concept and one of those “why-has-nobody-done-this-before” things. The Glyph originally started life as a Kick starter campaign way back in 2013, and has finally become a legitimate product you can buy on the high street.
Considering what’s packed into it, the Avegant Glyph isn’t too bad to look at. It resembles a pair of oversized Beats by Dre. Each chunky ear cup houses buttons that you can use to skip tracks or change the volume.
The problems with the design are two-fold. At 434g, it’s a heavy piece of kit that you’ll certainly begin to notice if you’re wearing it for a long time. And, unfortunately, it’s just not very comfortable. Sadly, it’s also a bit too bulky and uncomfortable at this point. It’s also limited to HDMI input which can be very limiting.
Although, for gadget geeks and tech nerds, the Avegant Glyph is amazing. Unfortunately, the rest of the world hasn’t caught up yet. The company had to get something made and out into the wild to see what became of it. Future versions, if they come, may be lighter and cheaper with on-board storage for loading media directly. That would be great. As it is, the Avegant Glyph is a great piece of consumer tech and a brilliant gadget – the world just isn’t quite ready for it yet.
